Periodontal disease is a gum infection that affects the gums and bone that support the teeth.
What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is caused by plaque bacteria that attacks the gums, supporting tissue and even the ones. Warning signs of periodontal disease are:
Gums that are red, swollen, tender or bleed easily
Gums that have pulled away from teeth
Persistent bad breath or bad taste
Changes in tooth position or looseness
Factors increasing gum disease include; tobacco use, poor oral hygiene, family history, especially crooked teeth, pregnancy, diabetes and certain medications. Not to worry – when detected in earlier stages, gum disease can be treated. Let Mel Mel Dental check your gums today and help ward off that sneaky attacker!
How we treat
Scaling and Root Planning Removes plaque and tartar above and below the gum line
Periodontal Maintenance Once we treat the infection it is imperative that we see you more often, usually every 3 months, for a periodontal cleaning to maintain your gum health
Adjunt Therapy
Arestin Antibiotic which is placed below the gum line to treat gum infections
Chlorhexidine Gluconate ( also known as peridex): Antimicrobial rinse that is flushed below the gums to decrease bacterial count
As a friendly reminder, dental health is dependent upon long-term daily oral hygiene (biofilm/plaque control), regular periodontal maintenance (often at three-month intervals) and professional monitoring and evaluation.
